Approximately 120 riders gathered a the Dyracuse Motorcycle Park just outside of Wisconsin Rapids to open the 2002 District 16 hillclimbing season. In the 600 class, Bay City, Wisconsin’s Mike Wood set the pace on his CR 500 with a time of 7.394, but, to the enjoyment of the mostly Harley Davidson biased crowd, two time open class national champion Lloyd Mueller lit up the hill on his Harley Sportster with a 7.236 second run. By time the larger classes came around in the second round again, the hill had slowed and Mueller’s time began to look out of reach.

The day’s ten fastest riders would be given another shot at fast time in the 80 Open. 600 class winner Mike Wood was the first to the line and laid down a 7.298 second time, the closest anyone had been to Mueller’s time all day. Current Open class national champion Todd Cipala was the next rider to take his turn at the hill. Cipala opened up his Harley Davidson and set the amazing time of 7.102 seconds, taking the lead in both the 80 Open and fast time. Mueller, not content with second fastest time, flew up the hill in 7.015 seconds to win the 80 Open and take fast time of the day. "I tried a different line, the bike was working good, and I found some traction," Mueller commented on his run.
