WOODS HAVE BIG DAY AT REDWING

By: Bud Northrup - Red Wing, MN - July 18, 2004

The Wood family had a good day at the Red Wing hill climb, snaring three class wins on the Indianhead M/C 300 foot, three stage hill. Multi Time National Champion, Mike Wood, claimed his first win in the 250cc class, and had to overtake Ryan Peterson to do it. Peterson sailed his CR250 over the top in 7.430 seconds to take the class lead into the intermission, with Wood carding a 7.654 second time for second. In the second half, Wood unleashed one of his patented picture perfect rides and flew his Honda over in 7.173 seconds to take the class win. Peterson responded with a hand full of throttle, but had to let up with wheelie problems and couldn’t improve on his first round time.

Wood, from Bay City, Wisconsin, returned on his CR500 in the 600cc class, and blitzed the hill in 6.264 seconds to set the fast time of the day to that point, and that time would have held up for the class win. On his second ride, however, he was even faster with a blistering 6.132 second time. Todd Cipala, from Ellsworth, Wisconsin, was his closest competitor with a 6.399 second time on his KX500.

But that wasn’t all for the Wood family. Mike’s little girl, Casey, riding a KX65, beat all the guys in the 65cc class, topping the hill in 14.249 seconds in second round action to come from behind and overtake Cody Ihlen who posted a 16.793 second time in his first round, and improved it with a 16.675 second run on his second ride.

Casey wasn’t the only young lady to claim a class win. In the 125cc class, Jessica Prebe set the first round time to beat at 8.891 seconds on her YZ125, then improved it with a fine 8.437 second run on her second run. And she needed the improvement, as her cousin, Jacob Prebe, nearly overtook her as he posted an 8.446 second time on his second ride on his Honda.

Todd Cipala slipped under Wood’s time to set the Fast Time of the day, as he was the only rider to break in to the 5 second bracket, riding his Harley to the King of the Hill class win – a one run shootout of the ten fastest riders of the day.

Jay Sallstrom, from Mankato, Minnesota, was also a double class winner, taking the 85cc Senior Mini win with a 9.6720 second time. He returned in the 200cc class and claimed that win also with a 7.438 second time on his KTM.

The Indianhead Club’s next event will be the 2004 Midwest Championship Hillclimb Invitational on September 4th and 5th. This event will feature the top riders from Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana, with others coming in by special invitation. It will be an outstanding event – I recommend it to anyone.
