About 140 riders competed in the fifth climb of the 2003 Minnesota Hillclimbing Season. The 80 Open began as a battle of the Kawasaki Triples as Ellsworth, Wisconsin’s Todd Cipala set the pace at 5.975 seconds on his Triple but was topped by La Valle, Wisconsin’s Kirk Mueller with a 5.842 also riding a Triple. However, multiple time national champion Mike Wood took the lead with a 5.765 second ride, which eventually won the class. "I just hit everything right," Wood commented after the race. Fast time of the day, however, belonged to Cipala, who on his Triple set an amazing first round time of 5.569 seconds.
