D23 Hill Climbers Return to Red Wing, MN

By Mike Nelson - 6/3/07 - Red Wing, MN

The Indianhead Motorcycle Club hosted the second of their three Hill Climb events for the 2007 season Sunday, June 3rd.  Once again the weather threatened the event as some light rain fell at the beginning of the second run.  There wasn’t enough rain to stop these riders from competing though.  It only added to the challenge of finding a way to the top of a hill that was already soft and slick from excessive rainfall the week before the event.

The conditions didn’t bother the ATV class as they started things off.  All the riders went over the top with Brian Childs, Corey O’Neil, and Todd Hintz all posting fast times under 10 seconds.  Things weren’t so good for the micro mini and 65cc classes.  Those little tires just didn’t want to hold on to the wet and soft hill.  No rider from either class cleared the top on their first run and only two 65cc riders scored times for their second run.  Mitch Koester put his Kawasaki over in 14.848 seconds and Loran Cipala stayed with her KTM to get a time of 21.565 seconds.

The Mini Juniors and Mini Seniors had a little better luck as they took their 85cc bikes to the hill.  The top three made it all the way over in both classes.  The Juniors were led by Mitch Koester who got his KTM over in 11.233 seconds while Dylan Nichols put up a very fast 9.989 second run on his Honda for the Seniors.

The mid-sized bikes seemed to handle the tough conditions well with just enough power and weight to get some grip out of the hill.  David Fasnacht got his 125cc bike hooked up and won the class on his second run with a time of 8.708.  He was a full second faster than Jacob Prebe who took second place by just 8/100ths of a second ahead of Jared Gitter in third.  The 200cc class saw Casey O’Neil take top honors with a time of 8.584 seconds.  Jacob Prebe took second place with a 9.040 second run after wiping out and settling for 180’ on his first run.

The 250cc class really got hooked up for their second run and posted the top times of the day with the top two riders getting it done in less than 8 seconds.  Aaron Prebe claimed the top spot in the class with a 7.417second run on his Honda followed closely by Ryan Stevermer at 7.797 seconds.

When the 450cc class took to the hill we started to find out just how slick things were as these guys struggled to keep their bikes pointing up the hill.  Kory Fasnacht had it dialed in right off the line and won the class on his first run with a time of 8.419 seconds.  Ryan Stevermer managed an 8.803 to take second after losing it at the 190’ mark on his first run.

The big bikes really had their hands full trying to generate any speed as there just wasn’t enough grip in the hill for all the power they put down.  Many very good riders found themselves all over the hill facing into the woods on both sides as they skated their bikes up the hill or worse yet looking for help from the hill crew.  Ryan Stevermer won the 600cc class with a time of 8.874.  Brian Kinney finished second with Kaleb Northrup 5/100ths of a second behind in third.  Todd Cipala ran his 750cc triple up the hill in 8.466 seconds to win that class while Brad Cain won the open class with a time of 9.080.

The 4-Stroke class was won by Aaron Prebe on his Yamaha with a time of 8.413 seconds with Corey Danberry taking second posting a time of 9.133 seconds.  Jay Curtis took top honors in the Senior class with a time of 8.919 seconds.  His brother John finished third, 1/10th of a second behind Brad Cain in second place.  Greg ‘Coot’ Schmidt finished on top of the Super Senior class with a time of 15.128 on his big Yamaha followed by Wally Krech in second on his Indian.

The King of the Hill class was filled with unusual characters as most of the fastest times were put up by the smaller bikes on the wet hill.  Brian Childs qualified his ATV in the top 10 along with David Fasnacht on his 125cc ride.  Aaron Prebe won King of the Hill on his 250cc Honda followed by his brother Jacob in second on his 200cc KTM.

The tough conditions on the hill made this event a great show for the spectators.  They got to see some wild rides, spectacular wipe outs and a lot of flying mud as these riders worked this hill over for all they could get.

Olivia Bach works hard getting her Micro Mini KTM over the first jump on this wet and slippery hill.

OUCH!  Joseph McGurer stomachs the handle bars of his 85cc Kawasaki after planting it in the hill over the second jump.

Doug ‘Ole’ Olander throws mud all the way back to the start getting over the soft second jump on his open class Kawasaki.
