Just over 200 riders were present at the Indianhead Cycle Club’s grounds in Red Wing, Minnesota to start off a competitive and fun Father’s Day weekend of racing. Early in the 600 class, Red Wing’s own Eric O’Connor set the amazing time of 5.876 seconds on his Kawasaki, and no one was able to come closer to his time than a 5.9 for the better part of the day. As the day wore on, the hill had also slowed, making it unlikely for another rider to beat O’Connor’s time.

In the 80 Open, where the day’s ten fastest riders compete for a trophy awarded at the end of the season, O’Connor was the first to the line. He set a time of 6.076 seconds. However it was past 600 class champion Mike Wood who brought the battle in the five second range with a 5.920 second run. Current 600 class and 80 Open district champion Eric Donaldson topped Wood’s time with a 5.859 run, which also took the fast time lead. Open class national champion Todd Cipala, who qualified for the 80 Open on his Open class Harley Davidson with a time of 5.918 seconds, had yet to take his turn on the hill. He opened up his Harley and in an amazing 5.656 seconds, won the 80 Open and set the fast time. "I didn’t think the hill looked very good up until the 125 class, but then the moisture started to come out of the hill," Cipala said after his ride. "I got a good clean hole shot, I got set up for the first jump, I didn’t get crossed up, and landed well. After that it just kind of fell into place."
