District 23 Opens 2002 Hillclimbing Season May 4-5, 2002 Red Wing, Minnesota By Janelle Byer |
After a not so cold Minnesota winter, the 2002 District 23 hillclimbing season opened at the Indianhead Cycle Club’s grounds in Red Wing, Minnesota. The weekend of racing began with a practice day on the hill so riders would have a chance to tune their bikes and refine their skills on Red Wing’s hill. When Sunday rolled around, they were ready to go.
Going into the 80 Open, Open class national champion Todd Cipala had the fastest time of the day with a time of 5.880 seconds. First up to the line was 600 class winner Brent Donaldson. He had a run of 6.326 seconds on his KTM, but his lead was short lived when Park River, North Dakota’s Dan Dvorak flew up the hill in 6.035 seconds to take the lead. Dvorak’s time stood through out the class with the only real close call coming from La Valle, Wisconsin’s Kirk Mueller with a time of 6.073.
