Indianhead M/C Hillclimb Results

5/25/03 - Red Wing, MN - By Janelle Byer

Approximately 170 riders competed in the Indianhead Cycle Club’s Memorial Weekend Hillclimbs. The two races were the first of five events that will award points for both District 23 and District 16. The two organizations agreed to share these venues as an attempt to boost the number of riders and the level of competition.

On Saturday, riders drew close to the amateur hill record held by Brad Weichelt with a time of 5.36 seconds. Multiple time national champion Mike Wood was the first rider to break below the six second range with a 5.994 second ride in the 600 class, but Kirk Mueller claimed the lead with a 5.744 second ride on his 500cc Honda. In the Open class, Todd Cipala dropped down to a 5.577 second ride on his Harley. Cipala held the fast time lead until the second round of the Open class when Open class national champion Lloyd Mueller flew up the hill in 5.482 seconds on his Harley to take the Open class win. Cipala made up for it though in the 80 Open when his beat Mueller’s time with a 5.474 second ride to take the win and fast time.

On Sunday, the riders recognized the fact that the hill would deteriorate throughout the day, and knew the first round was their last shot to acquire the hill record. Unfortunately, by the time that the bigger bikes got a change to get on the hill, the traction was gone, and the hill record remained intact for another race. In the 750 class, Kirk Mueller set fast time of the day on his Kawasaki Triple with a 5.668 second ride, and in the 80 Open, Cipala narrowly edged out Lloyd Mueller for the win.
