WADE’S WILD AT ROCK RIVER RIDER HILLCLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Polo, IL - July 18, 2004

‘Wild Wade’ Schultz made a rare appearance in District 17 territory, but made it well worth his travel as he claimed two class wins and the Fast Time award at the Rock River Riders hillclimb on July 18. Riding a CR500 Honda, Schultz sailed high over the 150 foot hill in 3.331 seconds on his first ride, a time which would not only hold up for the 600cc class win, but also prove to be the fastest of the entire day. Cody Jenner, also riding a Honda, challenged hard with a 3.375 second run.

Schultz also claimed the win in the high money payout Open Pushrod class. Riding a vintage (are there any other kind?) BSA. Schultz topped the hill in 4.151 seconds to take the first round lead, but Sam Cochran slipped under him in the second round with a 4.018 second run on his Harley. Schultz was up to the challenge, however, as he grabbed a handful of Brit Bike power and flew the Beezer over the top in an excellent 3.587 seconds for the win and the big bucks.

Lloyd Haas was a double class winner on his screaming Kawasaki Triples. The National Champion in the 750cc class, he flew over the crest in 3.541 seconds on his first ride to take that class win, with ‘Wild Wade’ his closest competitor with a 3.917 second run on his Yamaha twin. Then Haas brought his 800cc Triple in for Open Class action, and came from behind in the second round with a 3.394 second time to take the win, overtaking ‘Lightning Lane’ Schultz, who had posted a 3.615 second time on his big Suzuki four banger in the first round.

Paul Hackbarth also enjoyed a double win day, taking his first in the 450cc class where he carded a a good 3.602 second time on his first ride on his KTM360. Cody Jenner, riding a YZ450F Yamaha was second with a 4.005 second run. Hackbarth also has one of those Yamaha thumpers, and he used it to take the 600cc 4-Stroke class win. He had to work a little harder, though, as his first round leading time of 4.250 seconds was beat by Daryl Johnson, who carded a very quick 4.024 second time on his Yamaha to take the second round lead. Hackbarth responded with an excellent 3.975 second high flying run to retake the lead and the class win.
