IT’S ‘FAST ANDY’ AT ROCK RIVER HILL CLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Polo, IL - June 17, 2007

‘Fast Andy’ Fortner lived up to his nickname at the Rock River Riders hill climb by posting the top two times of the day on the steep 150 foot hill near Polo, Illinois.  Fortner flew his CR500 over the top in a sizzling 3.306 seconds to set the Fast Time at that point, a time which would have held up for both the 600cc class win and Fast Time.  But, incredibly, in the second round he delivered a nearly identical run stopping the clocks in 3.305 seconds – one thousandth of a second quicker than his first run.  Paul Hacbarth, also on a Honda, was his closest challenger for both the 600cc class and Fast Time with an excellent 3.318 second run on his first ride.

Lloyd Haas had a good day, claiming two class wins on his Kawasaki triples.  Riding in the 750cc class the veteran rider topped the hill in a screaming 3.332 seconds on his first ride to take the class win .  Tom ‘Wild Child’ Daniels was close behind Haas with a good 3.409 second round on his screaming triple – the ‘Wild Thing’.  Haas charged the hill even harder on his second round in hopes of taking the Fast Time award, but crashed at 92 feet.  His first round time was third fastest overall for the day.  Haas rode his 800cc triple to the Open class win with a 3.453 second time, with Cody Jenner running second on his big fourbanger Kawasaki in 3.503 seconds.

Mike Popham was another double class winner, riding his hot Yamaha 450 to wins in both the 450cc and 600cc 4-stroke classes.  His 3.521 second time on his first ride in the 450cc class was good enough for that class win, with Paul Hackbarth second with a 3.589 second run on his KTM.  Popham was even faster in the 600cc four stroke class where he sailed over the top in 3.368 seconds on his first ride, the fourth fastest ride of the day.  Josh Eads, also Yamaha mounted, claimed second place with a 3.751 second run.

Mike Pulver also enjoyed a double win day, taking the Senior (40+) class with a 3.529 second ride on his Honda in the second round, overtaking Glen Fuegen who had taken the first round lead with a 3.552 second time on his Honda.  Pulver rode his CR250 in the 400cc Stock class, and took that win also with a 124 foot run, with Tim Dwyer second on his KTM with a 108 foot effort.

In youth class action, young Jeremiah Lyday was a double class winner.  His first win came in the 65cc where his 56 foot ride on his KTM65 bested Zack Bailey who climbed 50 feet on his Yamaha.  In the 85cc Junior Mini class, Lyday rode his YZ85 82 feet up the steep, low traction hill for the win, with Bailey second again.

In another youth action, Andrew ‘Little Fast Andy’ Fortner claimed the 50cc class win with a 22 foot ride on his little Honda, with Hank Smith second.  Alyssa Haling claimed the 85cc Senior Mini class win with a 109 foot effort on her CR85 with Joe ‘Jammin’ Joe’ McGurer the closest to her with a 97 foot effort. Alyssa’s ride was the best of all the youth riders.
