SCHULTZ FAST, HACKBARTH DOUBLES AT ROCK RIVER HILLCLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Polo, Il June 15, 2003

‘Wild Wade’ Schultz was the fastest guy at the Rock River Riders hillclimb on June 15. Riding a Yamaha 650 twin, Schultz blasted over the top of the steep and extremely rough 130 foot hill in 3.645 seconds to take the win in the 750cc class, and also claim the Fast Time of the Day award. Schultz crashed at 87 feet on his first ride, but no other rider in the class was able to clear the nasty cliff either. In the second round, Schultz just wouldn’t be denied and held his throttle open and flew the roaring twin over the top for the class win and Fast Time. Lloyd Haas was his closest competitor with a 4.050 second time on his Kawasaki triple and Dale Levan also topped the hill on his second ride for third place.

Paul Hackbarth had a good day, claiming two class wins and a second. His first win came in the hotly contested 600cc class where he followed a first round crash with a 3.709 second high flying ride on his Honda in second round action. Only John Simenec and Lloyd Haas of the 19 riders in the class were able to top the hill on their first rides, but the hill did wear down enough so that 12 made it in the second round. Marc Stamm stopped the clock in 4.262 seconds for second and Lane Schultz claimed third in 4.419 seconds, with Nate Simenic and Jeff Wiemken 4th and 5th.

Hacbarth’s second win came in the 600cc Four Stroke class, where he followed a first round crash with a 4.491 second clock stopper on his Yamaha thumper. No one in the class topped the hill on their first ride. Don Sheridan Jr, also Yamaha, carded a 4.881 second time on his second ride for second place and Glen Fuegen also topped the hill in second round action on his Honda for Third.

Hackbarth lost his bid for a perfect day in two ways. He was second fastest behind Schultz, and he also finished second behind Brent Stewart in the 450cc class. After first round action where everyone in the class of nine crashed, Hackbarth topped the nasty ridge in 4.309 seconds to take the class lead on his KTM360. But Brent Stewart showed his national championship skills on his second run, flying his KTM380 over in an excellent 3.765 seconds for the class win, and setting the overall fast time to that point in time.

Don Sheridan Sr also picked up two wins, taking the Senior class win with a good 3.995 second time on his Honda, with 51 year old Ron Todd running second on his KX500 in 4.298 seconds. Then Sheridan returned to run in the King of the Hill exhibition class (one ride for the top ten riders of the day), and grabbed that win with an excellent 3.638 second time, with Lloyd Haas second in 3.846 seconds.

In youth class action, five year old Garrett Holycross climbed 33 feet on his JR50 for the win in the 50cc class and Drew Daniels wrestled his KTM65 70 feet up the hill to win the 65 CC class. Shane Green claimed his 9th win in 10 climbs with a 102 foot effort on his YZ85 in the 85cc Junior Mini class, and Mike Popham stretched his point lead in the Senior Mini class with a 98 foot winning climb on his Yamaha.

Other amateur class winners were Dan Myers in the 125cc class (the only one in the class to top the hill), Kelly Senn in the 200cc class, and Kevin Cappello in the 250cc class. Lane Schultz was the fastest in the Open Class, R.J. Watson was the 400 Stock class winner, and Tad Hubner was the best of the Open Stock class. William Myers rode his Harley to the win in the Pushrod class and Greg Haas was the fastest of the AARP card carriers (Super Senior).
