JENNER’S FAST, WHEELWRIGHT DOUBLES AT VARIETY RIDERS CLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Ottawa, IL - July 17, 2004

Cody Jenner was the fastest guy again on the Ottawa Variety Riders rough 125 foot hill. He claimed the fast time in June, and did it again in July. Riding a Honda CR500, Jenner took the first round lead with a very good 4.048 second time. In the second round, however, Sam Cochrane delivered an excellent ride of his own ‘sailing over the top in 4.046 seconds to take the lead – but only for a short while. Jenner was up to the challenge as he launched his Honda with full throttle, sailed over the breaker at the 80 foot mark and stopped the clock in an astounding 3.920 seconds – the only rider to break into the threes all day.

Eric Wheelwright was the only double class winner of the day. Riding his Yamaha YZ250, he took his first win in the 250cc class. His first round leading time of 5.674 seconds was beaten by young Chris Senn, who topped the hill in 4.808 seconds in the second round to take a temporary class lead. Wheelwright responded with a very good 4.545 second run to reclaim the lead and the class win.

The 400cc Stock class was the biggest class of the day with 14 riders, and Wheelwright found himself in second place at the end of the first round with a 5.708 second time on his stock length YZ250. Art Donavan topped the hill in a nice 5.201 seconds to take the lead in to intermission. Wheelwright turned the throttle a little tighter on his second ride, and sailed over the top in 5.051 seconds to take the lead and his second class win of the day.

The Sheridans had a good day as Don Sr took the win in the Senior (40+) class, while Don Jr grabbed the win in 600cc 4 Stroke class.

In youth class action, Logan Moody took the 50cc class win, Brett Kalaher was the top 65cc class rider, Derek Swanson was the fastest of the 85cc Junior Mini class riders and TJ Russell claimed victory in the 85cc Senior Mini class.
