Paul Hackbarth had an outstanding day at the Variety Riders hill climb at their Club grounds near Ottawa, Illinois on June 4, winning all three of the ‘regular’ classes he entered, and taking second in the King of the Hill shootout.

Hackbarth’s first win came in the 450cc class on his KTM 360, and was a come from behind effort.  He crashed hard at 95 feet on his first and found himself in 5th place, with Brent Stewart holding down the first half lead with a 3.890 second time on his KTM380.  In the second round, however, Hackbarth didn’t make any mistakes and shot over the hill in a very quick 3.801 seconds to take the lead.  Stewart responded with a good run, but his 3.845 second time wasn’t quite good enough to take the lead back.  Cody Jenner took third with a 4.207 second run on his YZ450F Yamaha thumper.

Hackbarth also has a Yamaha 450cc thumper, and he brought it in to top the hill in 4.316 seconds on his first ride, then followed it with a 4.101 second time in the second round to take the 600cc 4 stroke class win.  Jeff Jack grabbed second on his 250cc Yamaha thumper with a 4.925 second run.

Paul’s final win came in the ultra competitive 600cc class, but he put the win away on his first ride, a brilliant 3.818 second time on his CR500.  Eric Wheelwright was his closest competitor with a first round 3.961 second time, and a slightly better 3.945 second run in the second round.  Hackbarth carded another very good run, a 3.853 second effort, on his second ride. .Brent Bowman took 3rd place on his KX500 in 4.022 seconds.

Wheelwright got a measure of revenge in the one run King of the Hill shootout for the top ten riders.  Hackbarth posted an excellent 3.726 second time on his KTM to take the lead, but Wheelwright flew his YZ250 over the top in a blazing 3.695 seconds to edge his good friend and claim the ‘King for a Day’ trophy. Brent Bowman was close behind Hackbarth with a 3.781 second time on his KX500 for third place.

The King of the Hill victory was Wheelwright’s second of the day as he also claimed the 250cc class win with times of 3.958 and 3.914 seconds.  R.D. Miller III came in second on his KX250 in 4.038 seconds with Robby Noyes taking third in 4.144 seconds.

Bill ‘Wild Bill’ Myers was also a double class winner, taking both the Open Class and Open Pushrod class wins on his big and fast Harley.  He rode only once in the Open Class, his 3.687 second first round ride holding up for not only the class win, but also Fast Time of the Day. Terry Bailey was second on his big Harley in 4.166 seconds with R.D. Miller II taking his Harley over in 4.282 seconds for third.

Myers had to work harder for the Pushrod Class win, as Miller grabbed the first round lead with a 3.729 second run, with Myers carding a 3.907 second time.  In the second round, however, Myers held the throttle a little longer on the thundering Harley and flew it over the top in 3.677 seconds to not only take the class win, but improve on his own Fast Time.  Miller also improved his time on his second run, but his 3.719 second time still left him in second place.

In Youth Class action, Logan Moody took the 50cc class win with Dakota Watson second.  Brett Kalaher was the 65cc class winner with Matt Kinkin second.  Kalaher’s 5.000 second time was the best of all youth riders, and he was awarded an incredible 6 foot tall Youth Fast Time trophy for his efforts. Mike Missel was the 85cc Junior Mini Class winner with Jessica Coon second, while Justin James claimed the Senior Mini class win followed by Blake Cappello.
