JENNER RULES AT VARIETY RIDERS HILLCLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Ottawa, Illinois - June 19, 2004

Cody Jenner had a big day at the Variety Riders hill climb on June 19. Riding his Honda CR500, Jenner was the only rider in the amateur action who broke in to the 3 second range. The club had cut a 4 foot vertical wall in the hill at the 80 foot level, and it stopped many riders from seeing the top. Jenner, however, hit the wall with his front wheel up and throttle on, flying over the the top of the 130 foot hill in 3.920 seconds to take the class win and the Fast Time of the day award. Jared McKay was his closest competitor with a 4.046 second run on his KX540.

Jenner wasn’t done, however, as he brought his machine back in the King of the Hill one run shootout, and won that also. The club moved the out of bonds line for this class, allowing the riders to bypass the wall, and Jenner sailed high in the air over the top with a 3.860 second winning time. ‘Crazy Jake’ Tackitt was second on Gayle Jenkins’ RevLoc Honda with a 3.875 second time with McKay in third.

McKay had a very good day also, posting wins in both the 250cc and Open Stock classes. Riding his classy YZ250, he got slowed considerably by the wall on his first run, carding a 6.362 second time, putting him in 3rd place behind Eric Wheelwright and Matt Peters. In the second round, however, McKay skipped over the wall and sailed over the top in 4.471 seconds to take the win. Wheelwright improved his first round time with a 4.545 second run, but had to settle for second.

In Open Stock action, no one was able to top the hill, but McKay came closest with a 121 foot run on his CR450F Honda thumper, with Art Donovan running second with a 110 foot effort.

Wheelwright, however, was able to get his stock bike over the top in the 400cc Stock class. His 5.708 second run on his YZ250 in the first round had him in second place behind District Point leader R.J. Watson, who posted a 5.680 second time on his CR250. Wheelwright overtook Watson in the second round with a sizzling 5.051 second run for the class win, and Art Donovan slipped into second place with a fine 5.201 second run.

Casey Rick was also a double winner, claiming both the Open and Pushrod class wins on Terry Bailey’s big and bad Harley.

In youth class action, Kaylee Cox took the 50cc class win, Brett Kalaher was the 65cc class winner, Derek Swanson was the fastest in the 85cc Junior Mini class, and T.J. Russell was the best of the Senior Mini contestants.
