Mankato Hillclimb

July 21, 2002

By: Janelle Byer

Under a hot summer sun, riders from all over the Midwest came to race at the Kato Cycle Club’s grounds just outside of Mankato, Minnesota. The hill was the same design as it had been nearly one month ago when the riders last raced at Mankato. Immediately at the bottom timing lights was a small knoll that led up to a larger jump. From there the hill continued to a third and final jump before cresting.

The race for fast time truly began in the 450 class when Ellsworth, Wisconsin’s Ryan Peterson dropped into the five second range on his KTM with a time of 5.6801 seconds. 600 class rider Ernie Beckwith set a time of 5.6786 seconds to match Peterson’s pace, but Bay City, Wisconsin’s Mike Wood drove his Honda to a 5.6592 second ride and the lead. In the second round, Beckwith returned and set the amazing time of 5.3704 seconds. Wood attempted to answer, but fell short with a 5.5149 second ride. In the 80 Open, however, the battle was settled when Wood blasted though Beckwith’s time with a 5.2365 second run. "I switched gearing three times today," Wood said after his win. "I guess I finally got it right."
