The Kato Cycle Club held its annual Father’s Day Hillclimb under blue skies just south of Mankato, Minnesota. About 120 riders, half the typical amount, participated in the event. Most speculated the low number of riders was due to the fact that several other hillclimbing venues were being held the same weekend. With the low rider count, several different riders as well as some usual riders were able to work their way to the front of their classes and eventually into the 80 Open.

    In the 80 Open, Plattsmouth, Nebraska’s Ernie Beckwith set the pace on his 500cc Honda with a 5.695, followed closely by Mankato, Minnesota’s Scott Juhlin with a 5.859 second ride. 600 class National Champion Mike Wood claimed the lead with a 5.057 second ride. Several riders were able to close in on Wood’s time, but no one was able to surpass it. Woodbury, Minnesota’s Brad Cain settled into second place with a 5.451 second ride on his newly acquired Open class bike, and Nick Bronneberg took third with a 5.521 second ride. Wood’s time earned him his first 80 Open of the 2003 season, and fast time of the day.
