There's just 2 weeks left now to register for the 2016 AMA Hillclimb Grand Championship at the brand-new Thunder Ridge facility in Neoga, IL!
We just had our shake-down event for the new location this past weekend, and had a historic number of riders come out for the D17 climbs - over 140 each day, as compared to last year's average of ~80 - a great turnout with riders coming from far and wide!
There's a picture of the hill as it was for this past weekend - after having put down nearly 600 rides on it, we're going to make some minor tweaks, but basically the overall design will be as you see it. There's a very slight bend to the right as you make your way from start to finish which you can't really see in the photo from the side...and this is definitely not a hill that you can just make a banzai wide-open run on and expect to win. That would just result in a really spectacular crash
The fastest times were in the low 9s for the weekend, and I suspect that you probably can't get much faster than high 8s maybe. The layout is reminiscent of the climbs that had been held at Nashville, IN for a while, with the lead-in jumps to get a little airtime to show the crowd...you also frequently see this kind of design at events out west - other than the now-defunct Nashville location, I don't know of anywhere else east of the Mississippi that has a similar layout, so it's going to be a new experience for a lot of riders! And speaking of a show for the crowd, as you can see from that photo the spectators will be able to see the entire thing from the side, which is totally novel - and the crew has cut terraces into the facing slope where that photo was taken from for seating...from the spectator's point of view (literally), this is the best it can get!
There was a photographer on hand at this past weekend's event, who was also operating a drone above the course to get some video footage - hopefully we'll get our hands on some of that and get it posted up soon.
But as noted above, there is now only 2 weeks left to sign up for nationals! All entries must be postmarked by July 1st - and as always, there will be no late or on-site registration. This is the first time that the nationals have been held in Illinois since 1988 - 28 years ago...and for the record, your friendly neighborhood webmaster here was also a club member working the event at Peoria Dirt Riders where we held that national championship in Sparland, IL - so how's that for symmetry? TWO WEEKS.
Get over to the Pleasure Riders M/C website to get the form and send it in before July 1st! The PRMC image below will send you to the page where you get the entry form/info packet - click the giant form icon there (that says "Click Me!") and you'll have it.
