CAMPBELL CAREENS TO FAST TIME AT NEOGA

Neoga, Illinois    Sept 16, 2000

Doug Campbell was a double class winner as well as the fastest rider of the night as the Central Illinois Motorcycle Club rapped up their hillclimb season on September 16.  Campbell set a very fast time in the 600cc class on his first ride, topping the 140 foot hill in 3.609 seconds on his KX500.  No one would be able to match that time in the class all night, but Butch Fetters came close on his Kawasaki with a second round 3.680 second run. Randy Trosper put his CR500 over in 3.772 seconds for third, followed by Monty Roberts and Mark Goodman Jr.

In second round action, however, ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner blazed over the top on his ‘Hondasaki’ 750 triple  in 3.569 seconds, taking the class win and setting himself up for his fourth fast time of the year. ‘Wild Wade’ Schultz was his closest competitor with a 3.679 second time on his Yamaha twin with Goodman running third on his triple.

Campbell had another chance, however, and took full advantage of it in the Senior Class.  Proving that all senior riders are not ‘old and slow’, Campbell grabbed a handful of throttle and held it, flying his Kawasaki over the top in an amazing 3.439 seconds for that class win, and the Fast Time award - his second of the year.  He paid for the win painfully, however, careening and crashing hard over the top and couldn’t make it to the line for his second ride in the 400 Stock class, but, in his words, ‘no pain, no gain’.  Randy Trosper grabbed second place on his Honda in 3.701 seconds with Kevin McKay running third on his KX500.

David Peirson and Wade Schultz were also double class winners.  Peirson stretched his point lead in the 400cc class with a 3.759 second run on his 360 Husky, with Steve Dougherty running second on his KTM380 in 3.916 seconds.  Peirson’s second win came in the Open Stock class on his YZ426 thumper with a 3.984 second first round ride.  Scott Petty stopped the clock in 4.071 seconds on his CR500 for second place.

Schultz claimed two wins on his hot Harley, the first in the Open Class – but it wasn’t easy.  Scott ‘Scooter’ Sheets blasted his Superior Cycle Sportster over the top in 3.684 seconds to take the first round lead, but Schultz came from behind in the second round to post a 3.666 second time, just edging the Sparland teenager for the win.  Sheets’ Harley tried to self-destruct on his second ride, with one cylinder rising upward on the case studs.  Schultz had to take only one ride to win the Pushrod class, turning a 3.805 second first round time.  Sheets finished second again with a 3.976 second first round time, but was unable to get his Harley repaired for a second ride.

In other amateur class action, KDX200 riders Jared McKay and Jacob Tackitt ran first and second in the 200cc class with KX250 riders Mark Goodman Jr and Bill Kingery taking the top two spots in the 250cc class.  Kingery also grabbed the win in the 400cc Stock class on his Kawasaki, with Andy Fortner running second on his CR250.

In youth competition, Donnie Robbins stretched his lead in the D-17 points race with a win on his Cobra in the 50cc class.  Defending champion Dylan Brady ran second on his Polini. Mike Popham grabbed the 85cc Junior Mini Class win on his YZ80 with Steven Joe ‘Goose’ Weaver running second on his KX65.  Nick Mayo was the winner in the Senior Mini Class on his CR80 with Jacob Tackitt in second place on his YZ80.
