Mark Goodman Jr, the 18 year old young gun from Indianapolis, had another of his great hillclimbing nights as he claimed two class wins and the overall Fast Time award at the Central Illinois M/C hillclimb on July 21. Goodman took the fast time award in the super competitive 600cc class, by topping the rough, steep 90 foot hill in 2.524 seconds on his Honda in the first round. The current class point leader, Andy Fortner, was his closest challenger as he sailed his CR500 high over the top in 2.617 seconds. In second round action, Fortner challenged hard again, stopping the clock in a very fast 2.644 seconds, but had to settle for second place.
Goodman's second win came in the 250cc class where he delivered the first sub 3 second run of the night, a 2.901 second flight on his KX250. That time would have held up for the win, but just for fun, he rode again and flew his Kawie over the top in an even faster 2.852 seconds in the second round. The current class point leader, Matt Peters also broke the 3 second mark with a sizzling 2.977 second run on his Honda for second place, followed by John Jolliff, Cody Jenner and Jon Creek.
Wade Schultz also enjoyed a double win evening - something very 'normal' to him. His high flying 2.647 second blast over the top on his first and only ride on his Yamaha twin held up for the entire evening in the 750cc Class, giving him that win. His second win came in the Pushrod class where, again, he took only one ride. Riding his incredibly fast Harley, 'Wild Wade' thrilled the Harley fans with a roaring charge over the top in the first round, stopping the timer at 2.749 seconds. No one else in the class could break the 3 second barrier with Scott Sheets Jr came the closest with a 3.046 second time on his hot Harley.
Matt Peters had a good night, taking a first in the 400cc class to go along with his second place 250cc class finish. Peters delivered a 3.131 second time on his KTM 380 in the first round to take the lead and no one beat that time except himself, when he took a 'free' ride in the second round and flew over the top in 2.891 seconds. Yamaha riders Scott Buchholz, Gordon Green, Paul Hillard and Shawn Chinouth filled out the top five places.
Kevin Ryan stretched his slim lead over Paul Hart in the 125cc class, but had to come from behind to do it. The 16 year old Hart rode his stock length Husky 125 over in a very good 3.689 seconds to take the first round lead while Ryan managed a 3.768 on his KX125 to lie in second place at intermission. In the second round, however, Ryan put together a picture perfect ride and topped the hill in 3.648 seconds, moving just 41/1,000's of a second under Hart. Hart gave it a good shot on his second ride, but the stock length bike wheelied on him and he had to shut it down or loop it so he carded 'only' a 4.087 second run and had to settle for second place. Josh Denson was third with a very good 3.786 second run on his Honda with twin brothers Nick and Damon Mayo taking 4th and 5th on their Suzukis.
Brent Warfel took over the point lead in the 200cc class with a come from behind 3.574 second run on his KTM, after crashing hard on his first ride at 64 feet. Gordon Green was his cl;osest challenger, stopping the clock in a good 3.668 seconds on his 1984 KDX200. Paul Hillard, Kelly Senn and Keith Klett finished off the top five spots.
In youth class action, Donnie Robbins and his Cobra moved closer to point leader Dylan Brady and his Polini as Robbins took the 50cc Automatic class win and Brady took second. Steve (Goose) Weaver extended his lead on his KX65 in the 85cc Junior Mini class with the win there with Drew Daniels and his KTM65 claiming second. Brent Bowman improved his standing in the Senior Mini class with that win, with class point leader Donnie Barber III taking second.
Other amateur class winners were Mike Kessel in the Open class, Randy Trosper (what, again?) in the Senior class and Gayle Jenkins (what, again?) in the Super Senior class. Paul Hart rode his 125cc Husky to the 400cc Stock class win, Steve Shafer was the best of the Open Stock riders, and John Barna was the winner in the Quad class.
