Neoga, IL - June 9th, 2002

Young Jared McKay had a perfect night at the Central Illinois M/C hillclimb on June 9, winning both classes he entered and taking the Fast Time award. On the night before, McKay set the fast time in the 600cc class with a screaming 2.668 second run on his KX500, but fell to second place as ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner flew his CR500 over in 2.555 seconds to take the class win and the Fast Time Award. On this day, McKay carded a 2.879 second time to take the class lead and fast time into intermission, as Fortner’s 2.973 second run had him in second place. In the second round, it looked like Fortner had pulled it off again, as he blitzed the hill in 2.792 seconds to take the lead. McKay was up to the challenge however, and blasted off the line with a handful of throttle and held it on, flying wildly over the top in 2.705 seconds to claim the class win and Fast Time Award. Scott Petty also broke into the 2’s with a 2.953 second time for 3rd place, followed by Butch Fetters and Randy Trosper.

McKay also took the win in the 250cc class on his beautiful YZ250, turning in a 3.092 second run on his first ride that held up all day. Matt Peters, the 2001 district points champion, was his closest challenger with a 3.213 second run on his CR250. Jon Creek, Cody Jenner and Kevin Cappello filled in the top five places.

Matt Peters enjoyed an excellent day, as he claimed three class wins to go with his second place in the 250 class. The first win came on his KTM 380 in the 450cc class, as he sailed over the top in 3.165 seconds, easily outrunning his closest competitor, Paul Hillard, who carded a 3.946 second time on his Yamaha twin for second place and newcomer Cliff Sparling on Steve Shafer’s YZ400. He was also dominant in the 400 Stock class, with a winning time of 3.483 seconds on his YZ400F thumper. His closest challenger was Andy Fortner, who topped out in 3.962 seconds on his Honda, with R.J. Watson running close behind him with a 4.002 second time on his KX250. Peters’ final win came in the 600cc 4-stroke class as he used his thumper again, carding a 3.373 second run for the win with Butch Fetters running second.

Mark Peters claimed the Senior Class win for the second straight day with an excellent 3.085 second time on his KTM550, just barely quick enough to edge the current point leader, Randy Trosper, who stopped the clock in 3.118 seconds on his Honda. The ‘Old Pro’, Gayle Jenkins, continued his unbeaten season in the Super Senior Class with a 3.232 second time on his Honda. He had to come from behind for the win, as he crashed at 82 feet on his first ride, and Ron Todd took the class lead into intermission with a 3.411 second run on his KX500. Todd, however, crashed himself at 88 feet on his second ride trying to overtake Jenkins for the win, so had to settle for second, giving Jenkins his sixth straight win of the young season..

In other amateur action, Billy Hanes was the 125cc class winner with Brent Bowman in second and Jacob Tackitt took the 200cc class win with Gordon Green in the second spot. ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner grabbed the 750cc win with Greg Rankin second and Steve Shafer edged Buzz Green for the Open class win, though Green came back to win over Shafer in the Pushrod class.

Butch Fetters grabbed the Open Stock class win with Shafer second.

In youth class action, Dylan Brady stretched his point lead in the 50cc Automatic class with another win on his Polini, and Cody Rankin took the Junior Mini win with Kevin Bond claiming second. Mike Popham was the best Senior Mini rider with John Gocken taking second.
