IT’S KING McKAY AT CENTRAL ILLINOIS HILLCLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Neoga, Illinois June 8, 2003

The second round of the Kaleb Northrup sponsored King Of The Hill series was run at the Central Illinois M/C on June 8 on their 90 foot cliff near Neoga, Illinois. The ten fastest riders of the day competed for a very nice trophy and hope for the overall season title – each hillclimb club in Illinois will host one event. Jared McKay, a 17 year old ‘Young Gun’ from Neoga, was the King for this day, with a 2.421 second high flying run on his KX500. An interesting side note would be that McKay was not having a very good day up to that point, and would not even have been riding in the King class, except Wade Schultz, who had qualified, declined his ride, so the 11th fastest rider was brought in – Jared McKay. Adding to the irony, if Schultz had not given up his spot to McKay, his brother, Lane, would have been the winner as he posted the second fastest time with a 2.516 second run on his CR500. Scott Petty, Andy Fortner and Jake Tackitt filled out the top five places.

Matt Peters was a double class winner for the second straight day, his first in the 250cc class with a convincing 2.526 second time on his CR250. Clay Garwood was his closest competitor with a 2.703 second run on his Honda, followed by McKay, Billy Tom Hanes and Butch Fetters.

Peters carries the National #4 plate on his KTM380, and rode it to yet another win in the 450cc class with a 2.479 second flight over the top. Paul Hillard rode his screaming 350cc Banshee powered Yamaha over in 3.109 seconds for second, with young Mike Peters close behind him with a 3.115 second time on his RM400 Suzuki.

The Peters clan continued their strong running as Mark (Matt’s brother and Mike’s father), took his third straight victory in the Senior Class, moving him within 9 points of class point leader Scott Petty. Peters topped the hill in 2.617 seconds on his KTM550 to edge Petty, who carded a 2.664 second run on his Honda for second place. Kevin McKay and Steve Shafer ran third and fourth.

Butch ‘Fearless’ Fetters was also a double class winner, his first in the big and fast 600cc class with a very fast 2.380 second run on his KX500 on his second ride. ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner had set the time to beat in the first round with a 2.426 second time on his Honda, but couldn’t improve on it and had to settle for second. Lane Schultz was hot on Fortner’s tail with a 2.443 second time on his CR500, with Jake Tackitt and Scott Petty running 4th and 5th.

Fetters, the 600CC Four Stroke National Champion, took the win in that class also with a 2.959 second time on his KTM520, with Bud Northrup second on his ATK.

In youth class action, Graham Cornwell took his second straight win in the 50CC Automatic class on his Honda with Logan Moody second. Drew Daniels was the winner in the 65CC class with ‘Joltin Jake’ Wood second. Shane Green continued his dominance of the 85CC Junior Mini class with his 8th win in 9 races, with Blake Cappello second. Cody Rankin was the Senior Mini winner on his RM85 with Kevin Bond running second.

Billy Tom Hanes stretched his points lead in the 125cc class with a win on his Honda, and ‘Crazy Jake’ Tackitt moved into the lead in the 200cc class with a win on his KDX200. Andy Fortner took the 750cc class win on his Kawasaki triple, setting the fast time of the day a 2.298 seconds while he did it. Lane Schultz was the Open Class winner, Buzz Green was the best in the Pushrod class, and Bud Northrup rode unopposed in the Super Senior and Open Stock classes, as did Paul Hillard in the Quad class.
