SCHROEDER AND McKAY FAST AT CAYUGA

By: Bud Northrup - Cayuga, Indiana - July 24-25, 2004

Jared McKay had a good weekend, despite a painful crash, at the Pleasure Riders doubleheader weekend. He was a double class winner on Saturday night, taking the wins in both the 600cc and Open Stock classes. Mark Schroeder ruined his perfect night by beating him in the 250cc class and taking the fast time award with a time of 4.379 seconds. McKay was second behind Schroeder in both the 250cc class with a time of 4.681 seconds, and in the Fast Time contest, as he posted a 4.439 second time for that win. He also crashed hard on his CR450F on his second ride in the Open Stock class, painfully twisting his knee and damaging his bike to the extent it could not run on Sunday.

On Sunday, McKay was obviously still in pain as he walked (limped), but you couldn’t tell it from the way he rode. He first won the 250cc class with a 4.430 second time on his YZ250, just enough to edge Schroeder who had to settle for second with a 4.440 second run on his Yamaha. Riding his KX540 in the 600cc class, McKay won the class again with a 4.231 second ride in the second round, overtaking ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner who had posted a 4.279 second class leading fast time in the first round. The time would hold up for Fast Time of the Day. McKay wasn’t quite done yet, however, as he came back to win the King of the Hill shootout for the ten fastest riders, giving him three class wins and Fast Time – a perfect day!

Schroeder did get a win on Sunday to go with his Fast Time win of the night before, posting a 4.560 second time to win the 400cc Stock class – not too big a surprise as he is the defending 2003 National Champion in that class.

The Pleasure Riders also give a Youth Fast Time award, and Kieven Hillard claimed it on Saturday night with a 5.634 second winning time in the 85cc Senior Mini Class. Mike Popham claimed the big trophy on Sunday with an outstanding 5.193 second run on his YZ85.

In other youth class action, ‘Jammin Joe’ McGurer had a good weekend with three class wins. Joe won both the 65cc and 85cc Junior Mini classes on Saturday, and on Sunday repeated the win in the 65cc class and took second place in the 85cc class behind district point leader Caleb Emory.

The ‘Golden Gockens’ had another good weekend also. Young Matt took the wins in the 50cc automatic class on both days, while brother John Michael was a double class winner on Saturday, riding Jared McKay’s CR450F to the win in the 600cc 4-Stroke class, and his YZ250 to the 400cc Stock class win.

The Pleasure Rider’s next hill climb weekend will be the State Championship weekend on August 21 & 22. The Saturday night race will be the Illinois State Championship, and a District 17 card is required to be eligible for the championship trophies. Those with a District 15 card only will be allowed to compete for their D-15 points only, and not be eligible for the trophies. On Sunday, the Indiana State Championships will be run, and a District 15 card is required to qualify for the state championship trophies. Those riders with a District 17 card only will be allowed to compete for their D-17 points, but not be eligible for the trophies.
