Brent Stewart made only his fourth D-17 hillclimbing appearance at the Pleasure Riders climb on July 14, and came away with his third Fast Time award. Riding his two time national championship KTM380, Stewart cruised over the top of the 150 foot hill in a good 4.210 seconds to take the first round lead lead in the 450cc class, but it wasn’t the fastest ride of the day as Mark Schroeder had already posted a 4.198 second time in the 250cc class. ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner nailed an even faster 4.124 seconds in the 600cc class and it looked as if Fortner might duplicate his feat of Fast Guy from the night before. But Stewart was up to the challenge in the second round, flying his beautiful KTM over in a sizzling 4.054 seconds to set a new fast time, which would hold up for the rest of the day.

Mark Schroeder enjoyed a double win day as his lovely wife, Sonnia, looked on from the judges booth. Riding his YZ250 stock length, Schroeder posted his 4.198 second time to take the lead in the large 250cc class on his first ride, then punctuated it with an even faster 4.135 second round effort. His win was convincing, as his closest competitor, Kevin Cappello, checked in with a 4.348 second time on his YZ250, just 1/1’000’s of a second quicker than Kevin Ryan, who stopped the clock in 4.349 seconds for third on his KX250. Stewart, riding his son’s KX250, was close behind Ryan with a 4.354 second run with Matt Peters running fifth.

Schroeder’s second win on his Yamaha came in the 400 Stock class, his second in two days, posting a good 4.263 second time on his first ride, and an even faster 4.180 seconds on his second round attempt. Chris Brown was the next best rider with a 4.272 second time on his CR250, with Matt Ringstrom, Brent Warfel and Matt Peters filling out the top five.

Butch ’Fearless’ Fetters also enjoyed a double win day, taking wins in the Open Stock and 600 4-Stroke classes on his KTM 520. His 4.299 second first round time was a winner in the Open Stock class, with Tom Brown and Jammie Brown claiming second and third on their CR500s. Fetters carded a 4.369 second time in 600 4-Stroke class for that win, with Curt Randall and Bud Northrup running 2d and 3rd on their Yamahas.

Gordon Green moved within 2 points of class leading Jacob Tackitt by taking the win in the 200cc class. Riding a 1984 KDX200, Green overtook Brent Warfel for the win with a 4.731 second time on his second ride. Warfel, riding a 2000 KTM200, carded a 4.892 second time to take the first round lead, and came close to Green’s time on his second ride, stopping the clock in 4.739 seconds, settling for second place. Class point leader Tackitt carded a 4.966 second time on his 1985 KDX200 for third with Mike Peters running fourth on his 1987 KDX200.

Fortner was a double winner also, taking the wins in the 600cc and 750cc classes. His 4.124 second ride on his CR500 in the first round held up for the class win in the 600cc class, with Jake Tackitt his closest challenger on Gayle Jenkins’ Honda, posting a very quick 4.142 seconds. Chris Brown, Randy Trosper and Jon Creek took the next 3 places in the 15 rider class.

Fortner’s second win came in the 750cc class with a 4.408 second time on his Kawasaki triple, with Greg Rankin running second on his Yamaha twin.

Other amateur class winners were Billy Hanes in the 125cc class, Buzz Green in the Open class, Randy Trosper in the Senior (+40) class and Ron Todd took his second straight win the the Super Senile (+50) class. Kevin Weaver took the Push Rod class win on Buzz Green’s Harley, and David Brown was the fastest of the four wheelers.

Youth class winners were ‘Dangerous’ Dylan Brady in the 50cc class, Nick Burke in the 85cc Junior Mini class and Mike Popham in the Senior Mini class.
