McKAY ON TOP AT PLEASURE RIDERS HILLCLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Cayuga, Indiana July 13, 2003

Jared McKay came close to the Fast Time award on the Saturday night part of the Pleasure Riders July 12-13 hillclimb doubleheader, but came up short, finishing second behind ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner. Sunday was a new day, however, and McKay attacked the 150 foot, 3 stage hill with a handful of throttle and blazed over the top in 4.040 seconds on his first ride in the 600cc class, setting a time no one could match the rest of the day. Butch Fetters and Fortner were close, posting times of 4.118 and 4.122 seconds respectively, took second and third places.

Scott Petty had another good day, picking up fourth in the 600cc class, but also taking his second straight win in the Senior Class with a very good 4.195 second run on his CR500, well ahead of runner-up Kevin McKay who claimed second on the Jared McKay KX500 with a 4.374 second run. Steve Shafer, riding a stock length CR500, took third with a 4.451 second effort.

‘Crazy Jake’ Tackitt stretched his lead in the 200cc class, taking his fourth straight win on his 1985 KDX 200. Tackitt had to overtake ‘Flash’ Gordon Green, who posted a 4.940 second time on his 1984 KDX, but he was up to the task with a good 4.801 second run for the win. Mike Peters and Keith Klett took 3rd and 4th.

Mark Schroeder had a good day as he took the win in the 400cc Stock class and second in the 250cc class. Riding his YZ250, ‘Murk’ sailed high over the top in the first round with a 4.238 second time for the win. John Michael Gocken was second on his Yamaha and the flying dentist, Dr. John Colbert, placed third.

Schroeder couldn’t quite pull off the double win (which he’s done several times this year), as his very good first round 4.301 second time on his stock length Yamaha was well short of Matt Peters, who flew his CR250 over the top in 4.192 seconds on his second ride to take the win from Schroeder.

But Peters couldn’t double up either by winning in the 450cc class, where he was riding a winning streak of five in a row. He had probably his worst rides of the year on his super fast KTM380, his 4.468 second round run being good enough for ‘only’ third place – his lowest finish of the year. Young Will Dalenberg, riding a stock length Honda 450 thumper, turned a 4.456 second first round time to take the win, with Scott Pearson, also on a 450 Honda, only 4/1,000’s behind him with a 4.460 second time for third. The top three riders were packed into a time span of only 12/1,000’s of a second!

In Youth class action, Shane Green came back from only his second non-win the night before with his 13th win in 15 climbs in the 85cc Junior Mini class. Matt Gocken took the 50cc class win, Caleb Emory was the best of the 65cc class riders, and Cody Ranking grabbed the 85cc Senior Mini win.

In other amateur class action, Brent Bowman ran his 125cc winning streak to five, Butch Fetters extended his streak in the 600cc four stroke class to TWELVE, and Paul Hillard took the win in the 750cc class. Steve Shafer rode his Harley to wins in both the Open and Pushrod classes, Ron Todd got his second straight win in the Super Senior class, and Tom Brown was the best in Open Stock.

In Quad racing, Brad Franklin was the fastest of the two stroke four wheelers, and Wade Garriott claimed the four stroke class win.
