IT’S FAST ANDY AT THE ‘OLD BUD SHOOTOUT’

The Pleasure Riders M/C honored one of their Life members, Bud Northrup, with the ‘Old Bud Shootout’ hillclimb on June 22. Bud was celebrating ‘the 30th anniversary of his 30th birthday’, and the club helped him with the event named in his behalf.

‘Fast Andy’ Fortner was the star of the show, as he posted the fastest time of the evening on his 750cc ‘Hondasaki’ triple on his way to the win in the 750cc class. And it wasn’t easy, as Randy ‘Rocketman’ Trosper had set a 4.082 second fast time on his first run in the 600cc class, which held up through the second round of that big and often fastest class. Fortner couldn’t match him on his CR500, coming in with a 4.121 second time – but Andy’s a double threat as he still had his fast triple to run in the 750cc class. And run it did, in the second round as Fortner charged the 150 foot hill with full throttle and sailed the screaming machine over the top in 4.081 seconds, taking the Fast Time award by a mere 1/1,000th of a second! Jason Northrup took second on his ‘Hondasaki’ triple with Boots Weber coming all the way from Wathena, Kansas to take third on his classy Yamaha twin.

In the 600cc class, Jared McKay put serious pressure on Trosper also, topping the hill in 4.100 seconds on his KX500 and Scott Petty was fast also with a 4.117 second run on his CR500. Butch Fetters posted a 4.177 second run on his Kawasaki for fifth, resulting in the top five riders being packed inside a tenth of a second!

Petty and Trosper met again in the Senior (+40) class, with a different result. This time Petty, the D-15 Hillclimb Referee, set the time to beat in the first round at 4.306 seconds. In the second round, Trosper nailed a 4.142 second run to take the lead, only to see Petty return with a sizzling 4.134 second run to claim the win. Ron Todd blazed over the top in 4.168 seconds on his Kawasaki for third place, followed by Mark Peters and Scott Pearson. Todd continued his good riding, however, in the Super Senior (+50) class and took that class win with a 4.531 second run, followed by Gayle Jenkins, Bud Northrup and Keith Klett.

Matt Peters was a double winner, scoring first in the 250cc class with a 4.305 second winning run on his CR250 in the second round, overtaking Kevin Ryan who had posted a class leading 3.375 second run on his KX250 in the first round. Peters had a somewhat easier time in the 450cc class, as his first round ride on his KTM380 of 4.303 seconds held up for the win as Scott Pearson and his CR450 thumper was his closest challenger with a 4.426 second time.

Pearson, however, did enjoy a double win night also on his pair of Honda thumpers. Riding his stock length bike, he sailed over the top in a very good 4.282 seconds to take the Open Stock win away from Butch Fetters who posted a class leading 4.533 second time on his KTM520 in the opening round. Pearson then brought his modified bike back in the 600cc Four Stroke class and knocked off Fetters again for that win. ‘Fearless’ Fetters bettered his Open Stock performance with a 4.422 second run, but Pearson was still a bit better, posting back to back rides of 4.393 and 4.339 seconds for the win. An interesting side note is that Pearson rode the extended 450 4 times and the stock bike twice – but the two times on the stock bike were better than any on the modified climber – maybe you really don’t need both bikes, huh Scott?

In other amateur class action, Billy Tom Hanes took the 125cc class win and Jake Tackitt was the 200cc class winner. Steve Shafer won both the Open and Pushrod classes and Chris Brown was the victor in the 400cc Stock class. David Brown was the fastest guy on a Quad.

In Youth action, Dakota Blakeny and His Cobra took the 50cc class wing with ‘Dangerous’ Dylan Brady claiming second on his Polini. Kieven Hillard flew his KX60 over the top to take the Junior Mini win with ‘Goose’ Weaver taking second on his KX80. John Gocken grabbed the Senior Mini win on his KX80 with Mike Popham in second on his YZ85.
