SCHROEDER HOT AT PLEASURE RIDERS HILLCLIMB

Cayuga, IN - May 5th, 2002

Mark Schroeder, from Danville, Illinois, was a championship caliber hillclimber for many years, but left the sport when he left the Danville area many years ago. Well, he’s back, and better than ever. Riding a 2002 Yamaha YZ250 with it’s stock swingarm, he posted double wins for the second day in a row at Cayuga, Indiana on May 5.

Schroeder’s first win came in the big and competitive 250cc class, flying high over the top in a blazing 3.922 seconds to take the class win. The 2000 Nataional 250cc Class Champion, Eric Wheelwright, also broke into the 3’s with his Yamaha, taking second in 3.985 seconds. Honda riders Craig Schnitzler, Matt Peters and Don Barber Jr claimed the next 3 places.

Schroeder met up with Wheelwright again in the 400cc Stock class and delivered yet another 3 second run, this one a 3.943 second time to take the win. Wheelwright, riding a KTM300, grabbed second place again, this time with a 4.011 second time. Jon Creek (Hon), Matt Ringstrom (Kaw) and Andy Fortner (Hon) filled out the top 5 places.

Wheelwright still went home happy, however, as the 2001 600CC National Champion showed his best with a blistering 4.801 second time on his CR500 to win the 600cc class and take the Fast Time award for the second straight day. He needed that superfast time for the win, as Randy ’Rocketman’ Trosper blazed high over the top on his Honda in 3.804 seconds, only 3/1,000’s slower than the Wheelwright Fast Time. Wade Schultz, Butch Fetters and Andy Fortner also carded times in the 3’s to fill out the top five places in the class.

Trosper was also happy however, as he added a win to go with his second place in the 600cc class. Riding the same CR500, he blew the Senior class away with a 3.812 second run, the only senior to break into the 3’s. Mark Peters was his closest competition with a 4.011 second time on his KTM550, followed by Doug Campbell (Kaw), Scott Petty (Hon), and Scot Pearson (Yam).

Young Brent Warfel took his second straight win in the 200cc class on his KTM200, followed by KDX riders Josh Denson, Gordon Green and Mike Peters.

Damon Mayo also posted a win for the second straight day, riding his RM125 to the win in the 125cc Class with a 4.357 second time. Twin bother Nick was his closest challenger with a 4.429 second time on his Suzuki. Billy Hanes, Brent Bowman and Josh Denson were the next three finishers.

In other amateur class action, Scott Pearson took the 450cc class win on his new CR450 thumper, and Butch Fetters rode his KTM520 thumper to the win in the 600CC Four Stroke class. Mark Goodman Jr was the 750cc class winner on his Kaw Triple and Lane Schultz took the Open Class win on his ‘Snortin’ Norton’. The ‘Old Pro’, Gayle Jenkins, repeated his previous night performance with a win in the Super Senior class on his CR500 and ‘Wild Wade’ Schultz grabbed the Open Pushrod win on his Harley. Tom Brown was the Open Stock winner while Jon Barna was the fastest of the ATV riders.

In youth class action Dylan Brady and Dakota Blakney thrilled the crowd again by taking their 50cc Automatics over the top. Brady was the winner this time, with a first round ride of 6.010 seconds, and an ever faster 5.885 second run on his Polini. Blakney claimed second place with a 6.862 second time on his Cobra. Cody Rankin took the 85cc Junior Mini win on his YZ80 followed by Shane Green, while Richard Miller III was the 85CC Senior Mini winner with John Gocken running second.
