SCHROEDER SHOCKS 'EM AT PLEASURE RIDERS HILLCLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Cayuga, Indiana May 3, 2003

The 2003 District 17 Hillclimb season started on May 3 at the Pleasure Riders M/C clubgrounds near Cayuga, Indiana. Mark Schroeder proved once again that you don't have to have a massive motor to go fast. Riding a stock length Yamaha YZ250, Schroeder had a perfect night, winning both the 250cc and 400cc Stock classes. In addition, his time in the 250cc class, 4.138 seconds, was the fastest of the entire evening, earning him the beautiful Fast Time trophy, and the $100 that went with it.

Schroeder, a mild mannered CPA from Danville, Illinois, set the fast time on his first ride of the season. His closest competitor in the 250cc class was Matt Peters, riding a Honda, who delivered a very fast 4.194 second run on his second round ride to take second place. Jared McKay nailed a very good 4.320 second run on his YZ250 for third place with John Gocken and Jon Creek claiming fourth and fifth.

Schroeder's second win came in the 400cc Stock class where he flew his Yamaha over the top of the 150 foot hill in 4.422 seconds on his first ride, a time which also held up for both rounds and the class win. John Gocken was very close behind with his Yamaha with a 4.449 second time, and John Colbert claimed third on yet another YZ250 with a 4.626 second run. Andy Fortner and Paul Hart rounded out the top five in the class.

Matt Peters continued his strong running in the 450cc class where he blazed over the top in 4.176 seconds for that win, well ahead of runner-up Paul Hillard who carded a 4.516 second time on his 350cc twin Yamaha. Scott Pearson was close behind Hillard with a 4.541 second run on his Honda 450 thumper, with Jason Northrup and Marcus Brown running 4th and 5th.

Scott Pearson was a double class winner on his CR450F thumper. His first win came in the 600cc four stroke class with a 4.585 second run, with Matt Peters and National Champ Butch Fetters running second a third. Pearson brought his Honda back to take the win in the Open Stock class also, posting 4.466 second time for that win, with 'Maico Mike' Bacon claiming second on his vintage Maico 490 in 4.591 seconds.

Jason Northrup appeared to have his 'YZ1220F' Yamaha dialed in better this year, taking the Open class win in 4.512 seconds. The bike, built by Jeff Thomas, features a handmade frame and a 1220 cc Yamaha FJ1200 motor. Ben Metcalf was the next best in the Open class with a retro looking 845cc Triumph, also set up by Jeff Thomas. Metcalf turned a 4.619 second time for second place, followed by Harley pilots Buzz Green and R.D. Miller II.

In youth action, Dakota Blakeny was a double winner, taking wins in both the 50cc Automatic and 65cc classes. Riding a LEM, Blakeny topped the hill in 7.007 seconds to win the 50cc class, with Matt Gockenthe only other rider in the class to see the top, doing it in 7.725 seconds on his Action 50. Five year Garrett Holycross thrilled the crowd with a wonderful 17.496 second hilltopping time on his 50cc 4 wheeler - he's a blast to watch!

Blakeny also claimed the win in the 65cc class, carding a nice 5.846 second run on his second ride to take the win on his KX65. 'Joltin Jake' Wood and 'Jammin Joe' McGurer took second and third on the Kawasakis with Nick Green and Dusti Gocken taking 4th and 5th.

Shane Green was very fast in the 85cc Junior Mini class, flying his YZ85 over in 5.812 seconds, his closest competitor, Caleb Emory, carding a 6.174 second time on his KX65. Nick Burke was the fastest of the Senior Minis, blazing over the top on his KX65 in an excellent 5.300 seconds for the win, with Steven Joe 'Goose' Weaver taking second on his KX65 in 5.408 seconds.

Other amateur class winners were Billy Tom Hanes in the 125cc class, Gordon Green in the 200cc class and Jon Creek in the 600cc class. Andy Fortner grabbed the win in the 750cc Scott Petty was the best of the Senior Class (40+) riders, and Ron Todd took the 'Super Senile' (50+) class win. Ryan Garriott was the best of the 2 cycle Quad riders while Mark Crum took the win in the 4-stroke Quad class.
