WILD NIGHT AT PLEASURE RIDERS HILLCLIMB

Cayuga, IN May 25, 2002

The wild guys, Tom Daniels and Wade Schultz, had an eventful night at the Pleasure Riders hillclimb on May 25. Daniels (‘Wild Child’), turned the fastest time of the night and claimed the big trophy and $100 that went with it, while Schultz (‘Wild Wade’) crashed hard on his first ride and sat out the rest of the doubleheader weekend.

Daniels’ fast time came in the 750cc class and he had to come from behind for the win. ‘Fast Andy’ Fortner had posted the best time in the class in the first round with a 4.043 second run on his Kaw triple, and Randy Trosper was sitting on a 3.934 second fast time from the 600cc class. Daniels blew both of those times away on his second ride on the ‘Wild Thing’, a 750cc Fast By Gast Kawasaki triple as he flew high and far over the top of the 150 foot hill in a startling 3.770 seconds for the class win and Fast Time award. Jason Northrup carded a 4.073 second time on his triple for third place with Paul Hillard and Joshua Brown running 4th and 5th.

In 600cc class action, Butch ‘Fearless’ Fetters flew his KX500 over the top in 4.000 seconds in the first round to take the class lead and fast time into intermission. Schultz unleashed one of his wild rides on his CR500 and got tossed off his pegs on the first jump. He regained one peg and kept the throttle twisted, flying sideways over the top and crashing hard. He was attended to by the EMT’s on duty who wanted to transport him, but he declined – suffering apparently a badly bruised hip (among other things). In the second round, the ‘Rocketman’, Randy Trosper blazed over the top on his Honda in a class winning 3.934 seconds, also setting a new fast time for a short while. Fetters had to settle for second place with Fortner, Northrup and Scott Petty filling out the top five on their Hondas.

Fetters did claim one win, however, taking the 200cc class title with a 4.684 second run on his vintage KDX200. Class point leader Brent Warfel took second place on his beautiful KTM200 with Jacob Tackitt and his old KDX running third.

In Senior Class action, the news was that Randy Trosper did NOT win – he was unable to match his 3 second 600 class effort, and his 4.071 second time was fast, but good for only second as veteran Kevin Weaver blazed over the top on his CR500 in 4.066 seconds for the win. Scott Pearson was close behind Trosper with a 4.078 second run on his CR450 for third place, with Scott Petty and Darrell Trent running fourth and fifth.

In other amateur class action, Billy Hanes took his first win in the 125cc class and Jared McKay got his first in the 250cc class. Scott Pearson was the winner in both the 450cc and 600 4-Stroke classes and Steve Shafer was the winner in both the Open and Pushrod classes. Gayle Jenkins was the Super Senile class winner, Matt Ringstrom took the 400 Stock class win and Tom Brown was the best of the Open Stock riders. The Quad class win went to Ryan Garriott.

In youth class action, Dylan Brady and Dakota Blakney again brought cheers from the crowd by topping the hill on their tiny 50cc automatics. Brady set the time to beat on his Polini with a first round 6.416 second run. Blakney put the pressure on with a 6.062 second run on his Cobra to move into the lead in the second round, but Brady was up to the challenge, bringing a roar of approval from the crowd with a 5.791 second winning run. Matt Gocken, Cole Lewis and Samantha Brown filled in the next 3 places.

Justin Trent grabbed the 85cc Junior Mini win with a fine 5.198 second run on his KX80, with Steven Joe ‘Goose’ Weaver running second on his Kawie in 5.278 seconds. Alan ‘Big Al’ Petty was the third place rider, followed by Kevin Bond and Cody Rankin. Mike Popham was the best of the Senior Mini riders, nailing an excellent 4.934 second time on his new YZ85, with Bobby Senn running second on his Kawasaki with a 4.991 second time. John Gocken, Donnie Barber III, and Richard Miller III filled out the top five places.
