Cipala Dominates at Bloomville

June 9, 2002

Bloomville, Wisconsin

By Janelle Byer

The usually large road bike crowd was present at the Rib Mountain Rider’s annual hillclimb. Around eighty riders took their shot at Bloomville’s step and rocky 130 foot hill through out the day. In the 450 class, Ellsworth, Wisconsin’s Ryan Peterson was the first rider to drop into the three second range, but his time was quickly topped by past 600 class champion Mike Wood. Wood flew his Honda up the hill in a time of 3.58 seconds to claim the lead momentarily. Bloomville’s hill record holder Todd Cipala took his 750 Kawasaki triple screaming up the hill in 3.55 seconds. Cipala returned to the hill on his Open class Harley Davidson and improved his time to 3.54 seconds, which was very pleasing to the crowd of mostly Harley riders. Wood, however, was determined not to be defeated and flew up the hill in 3.53 second on his 500 to reclaim the lead in the fast time race. Cipala, this time on his 500 Kawasaki, answered Wood’s ride with a 3.48 second ride. To ensure his time held for the remainder of the day, Cipala returned to the 750 class and once again stormed up the hill, this time in 3.38 seconds. "The hill was fast," Cipala commented. "I just envisioned a good ride."

In the 80 Open, Wood, Cipala, and eight other of the day’s fastest riders found themselves on the hill for a final run. Wood was the first to the line and set a quick pace at 3.68 seconds. His time was bumped however by crowd favorite Lloyd Mueller on his Open class Harley Davidson with a time of 3.44 seconds. Mueller anxiously waited at the bottom of the hill as Cipala prepared for his run. Cipala set a time of 3.48 seconds, which gave Mueller his second 80 Open of the season.
