June 7th, 2003 Rib Mountain Riders Hillclimb

Bloomville, Wisconsin - By Janelle Byer

Rain had soaked the area around Bloomville Friday night, so when Saturday morning rolled around, the riders were skeptical of whether or not the race would be held. Fortunately, the Rib Mountain Riders once again pulled off the event somehow despite the enormous amount of rain the night before and the threatening clouds overhead throughout the day. As far as the hill was concerned, the rain had conditioned it into a speedway. A handful of riders pressed toward the hill record of 3.12 seconds held by Todd Cipala.

Kirk Mueller was the first rider to break into the three second range with a 3.94 second ride, but eventually Todd Cipala topped his time in the 600 class with a 3.41 second ride. Cipala returned to the hill on his Kawasaki Triple in the 750 class and set the exact same time of 3.41 seconds. (Talk about consistency.) However, in the Open class, Cipala was able to low his time to a 3.28. During the second round, riders continued to improve their times and more were able to reach the threes. In the 750 class, Cipala once again tied his own time with a 3.28 second ride, but Kirk Mueller blazed up the hill in 3.14 seconds on his Triple. Mike Bronk and Cipala both were able to close in on Mueller during the Open class with runs of 3.22 seconds and 3.20 seconds, setting the stage for the 80 Open.

Danny Mears was the first rider to take his shot at the hill on set the pace at 3.64 seconds; however Cipala quickly claimed the lead with a 3.23 second ride on his Harley. Mueller was soon to follow on his triple, and tied Cipala for the lead with a 3.23 second ride. Both riders sat anxiously at the bottom of the hill to see if they would need to run again. Rider after rider went up the hill, and there were several close calls, most notably Bronk who ran a 3.28 second ride, but no one was able to beat the leading time. Mueller was the first ride the hill in the runoff and set the bar high with a 3.15 second ride. Cipala set a very respectable time of 3.25 seconds, but had to settle for second leaving the hill record intact.
