TACKITT’S TOPS AT BELLEVILLE HILLCLIMB

By: Bud Northrup - Belleville, Illinois - August 8, 2004

It was a RevLoc day at the Belleville Enduro Teams hillclimb at their clubgrounds just outside of Belleville, Illinois. ‘Crazy Jake’ Tackitt, riding one of Gayle Jenkins’ CR500’s with the RevLoc automatic clutch, turned the fastest time of the day with a 4.478 second high flying ride in the first round of acion. No one could match the time all day, and the ‘young gun’ from Mt Vernon took the 600cc class win and the Fast Time award. His closest competitor was Josh Denson, whose 540cc Kawasaki is also carrying a RevLoc clutch, and Denson carded a fine 4.505 second run for the second place cash. In third place was Brent Bowman, Tackitt’s ‘team mate’, who also rides a Jenkins RevLoc equipped Honda. Bowman topped the hill in 4.549 seconds to make it a 1- 2- 3 sweep for the RevLoc bikes.

Tackitt was also a double class winner as he rode his old but still fast KDX200 to the win in the 200cc class with a 5.205 second time, while Jimmy Cox finished second on his KDX in 5.349 seconds.

Young Mike Popham also enjoyed a double win day, taking his first in the 85cc Senior Mini class. Riding his YZ85, Popham topped the hill in 5.728 seconds on his first ride, and no one in the class could match him, with Kieven Hillard claiming second on his KX85 with a 5.939 second ride in the second round. Popham’s 5.889 second time on his second round would also have been good enough for the win.

Popham came right back in the 125cc class on his YZ125 and posted a 4.966 second time, again on his first ride, and again his time held up for the win. Brent Bowman was the runner up with a good 5.098 second time on his CR125.

Jeff Jack came over from Iowa to ride and was quite successful with one class win and two seconds. His win came in the Open Stock class where his 4.977 second first round ride on his KX500 was good enough to beat the District 17 class point leader, Jared McKay. McKay claimed second with a 5.278 second time on his CRF450 thumper. Jack also took second place in the 400cc Stock class, behind winner Rod Kalaher, and also rode his KX500 to second place in the Senior class, with Mark Peters claiming the win. The two top Senior riders actually tied for first with identical 5.009 second times, but Peters took the win with a 5.043 second tiebreaker ride, while Jack carded a 5.183 second time.

In other Youth class action, Thomas Groodnick took the 50cc Automatic class win, Brett Kalaher was the 65cc class winner, and District 17 points leading Caleb Emory was the fastest in the 85cc Junior Mini class.
