PULVER PUMPED AT KING CITY HILL CLIMB

The King City Dirt Riders held their last hill climb of the year with the Fast Time going to an unexpected class – the Senior, over 40, class.  Old isn’t always slow, you know.

Shane Green, who had taken the Fast Time the night before, posted a 3.374 second time on his KTM in the 450cc class, and that appeared to be the time that would carry into the second round of action.  But Mike Pulver shocked the young guns with a sizzling 3.338 second round on his CR500 in the Senior class to take that class lead and set a new fast time.  That time would hold up all day and earn the veteran rider his first fast time – in over 15 years according to Mike.  He had left the amateur ranks many years ago to ride professionally, and just returned to amateur riding a few years ago, riding his stock bikes and the Senior class. Mike Bacon was his closest challenger in the Senior class with a 3.525 second run on his Honda.

Matt Peters was Pulver’s closest threat for Fast Time, sailing his KTM380 high over the 140 foot hill in 3.345 seconds in the second round for the 450cc class win.  Green’s first round time held up for second place.

Joe (Jammin’ Joe) McGurer took the Youth Fast Time award for the second straight day, stopping the clock in 4.127 seconds on his KX85 on his first ride to win the 85cc Senior Mini class.  Dylan Brady claimed second on his Honda in 4.336 seconds. McGurer lost his bid for a second straight perfect day as Jeremy James edged him out of the 125cc class win.  James took the first round lead with a 3.981 second round and McGurer overtook him on his second ride with a 3.815 second effort.  But James responded with a slightly quicker 3.775 second run on his second round to take the class win from McGurer’s clutches.

In other youth class action, Brett Kalaher was McGurer’s closest threat for the fast time with a 4.205 second run on his little Kawasaki to win the 85cc Junior Mini class, with Jeremiah Lyday close behind with a 4.215 second time.  Lyday claimed the 65cc class win with D.J. Watson second, while Watson was the 50cc class winner with Dustin Foley second.

Mike Popham and Paul Hillard enjoyed double class wins.  Popham got his first in the 250cc class and it was a come from behind effort.  His first round 3.735 second time had him well down in the pack (6th), with R.D. Miller III leading with a 3.540 second run and Blake Cappello just three thousandths of a second behind him.  But in the second round, Popham nailed a very good 3.488 second high flying time on his Yamaha to take over the class lead.  Miller and Cappello couldn’t improve on their first round times and moved down to second and third.

Popham’s second win came on his YZ450F thumper in the 600cc four stroke class.  He didn’t waste any time in this class, sailing over the top in 3.395 seconds on his first round.  R.D. Miller was second again, this time on his KTM525 with a 3.524 second time.

Hillard rode unopposed in the 750cc class, but had to work to win the Open.  Cody Jenner took the first round lead on his big Kawasaki four cylinder with a 3.719 second run, and Hillard was in third place on his 800cc Kawasaki triple.  In the second round, Hillard posted a 3.610 second time for the class win, and R.D. Miller also slipped under Jenner with a 3.704 second time on his big Harley for second - his third second place finish of the day.
