Mt. Vernon, Illinois   August 19, 2001

Tom Daniels, the ‘Wild Child’ from Amboy, Illinois, had another perfect hillclimb day at Mount Vernon, Illinois, taking two class wins and the Fast Time.  No one is surprised when Daniels takes the fast time, as he does it frequently on his ‘Wild Thing’, a 750cc Kawasaki triple. On this day, however, Daniels carded the top time on a Harley borrowed from Steve Shafer, winning the Open class with the only 3 second time of the day, a 3.994 second run in the first round.  He would not have to ride again, as no one beat his time.  Scott Sheets Jr was the closest in the Open Class with a 4.192 second time on his Harley, and the class point leader, Mike Kessel, stopped the clock in 4.237 seconds for third place.

Daniels took his second win in the 750cc class, where he flew his ‘Wild Thing’ over the top in 4.025 seconds on his first ride.  Mark Goodman Jr carded a 4.158 seconds on his triple for second with Andy Fortner and Scott Petty running 3rd and 4th.

Gayle Jenkins, from Liberty, Illinois, had a double win day also. The 55 year old veteran is the current point leader in the +50 ‘Super Senile’ class, but on this day was also the fastest of the +40 Seniors.  He had to come from behind to win the Senior class, as his 4.532 second first round ride had him in third place behind Kevin McKay and Bob Fisher, who carded times of 4.303 and 4.370 seconds on their first rides.  Jenkins dialed it up a notch on his second ride, however, and topped the hill in 4.285 seconds on his CR500 to take the win.  McKay and Fisher had to settle for 2d and 3rd, with Mark Peters and Randy Hart running 4th and 5th.

Steve Shafer was also a double winner as he rode his Harley to the win in the Pushrod Class with a 4.636 second run on his second ride, overtaking Scott Sheets Jr who carded a 4.659 second first round time.  Shafer then topped the hill in 4.998 seconds on his KTM550 thumper to take the Open Stock class win with John Williams claiming second on his Yamaha.

Jared McKay stretched his lead in the 200cc class with a good 4.253 second winning time on his KDX 200, but had to settle for second in the 400cc class as he couldn’t quite duplicate his double win effort of the night before.

In the 400cc Class, Matt Peters, the class point leader, flew his beautiful KTM 380 over the top in a very quick 4.115 seconds on his second ride to take the win away from McKay, who had taken the first round lead with a 4.317 second time on Steve Shafer’s Yamaha.  Paul Hillard, Gordon Green and Ernie Bruss, all riding Yamahas, filled out the top five places.

‘Fast Andy’ Fortner showed his talent with a sizzling 4.079 second first round run on his CR500 to take the 600cc class win.  Jared McKay picked up another second in this class, as he was Fortner’s closest challenger with a high flying 4.118 second run on his KX500. Mark Goodman Jr was close behind McKay with a 4.157 second run on his Honda with Scott Sheets Jr and Darrell Trent taking the 4th and 5th spots.

In Youth class action, Taylor Hungate sailed his Cobra 50 over the top in 6.519 seconds to take the 50cc Automatic Class win.  Chris Peters, Chad Wilson and 3 year old Jeremiah Lyday followed him.  Justin Trent topped the hill in 5.398 seconds to take the 85cc Junior Mini class win with Cody Rankin second, while Chad Cox carded a 5.055 second time on his KX80 to take the Senior Mini class win with Billy Hanes in the second spot.

Other amateur class winners included Damon Mayo in 125cc class, Mark Goodman Jr in the 250cc class and Paul Hillard in the Quads.
