The King City Dirt Riders hosted a double header hill climb weekend  at their club grounds near Mount Vernon, Illinois on  August 16 and 17, with Matt Peters emerging as the top rider of the weekend.

            On Saturday night Peters, from Neoga, Illinois, carded the fastest  time of the night in the 600cc class and had to come from behind to do it.  In the first round, Mike Popham sailed his CR500 over the top in 3.879 seconds to take the class lead and set the fast time to that point.  But Peters countered with an even quicker 3.875 second run on his KX500 to take the class lead, and Fast Time, into intermission.  In second half action, class point leader Shane Green flew his Kawasaki high over the top in 3.874 seconds to take the class lead and set a new Fast Time by the slimmest of margins.  But, once again, Peters countered – pinning the throttle and blitzing the hill in a sizzling 3.835 seconds to take the win and the coveted Fast Time award.

            In Youth class action, Dustin Foley was a double winner.  Riding his little Polini,  he was the only rider in the 50cc class to turn in a 5 second time - his 5.469 second run well ahead of Braden Young who claimed second place in 6.296 seconds on his KTM.        Foley came back in the 65cc class and came from behind in the second round to overtake Dakota (D.J) Watson for that win.  Watson took the first round lead with a 5.607 second time on his KX65, with Foley in second place with a 5.733 second run on his Polini.  In the second round, however, Foley came very close to a 4 second run with an astounding 5.048 second time for the win.  Kendra Mason took third in 6.051 seconds.

            In other youth action, Tom Goodnick, flew his YZ85 over in 4.458 seconds on his first ride in the 85cc Junior Mini class to claim that win and the Youth Fast Time award.  .  Jeremiah Lyday was second in 4.589 seconds with class point leader Brett Kalaher third.

Joe (Jammin’Joe) McGurer rode unopposed to win the 85cc Senior Mini class.

            Peters continued his strong riding on Sunday, claiming three class wins, including the King of the Hill class – a one run shootout for the ten fastest riders of the day.  His first ‘regular’ class win came in the 250cc class where his 3.803 second first round ride on his CR250 was fast time to that point, and held up for the class win.  Shane Green claimed second with a 3.903 second time on his YZ250, with Mike Popham third.

            Peters didn’t waste any time in the 450cc class either, his first round 3.764 second time on his KTM380 setting a new fast time to that point of the day, and good enough for the class win.  Popham was his closest competitor this time with a 3.765 second time (only 1/1000 off!) on his Yamaha, with Green in third on his KTM.

            Peters’ bid for a perfect day was halted in the 600cc class.  Jake Tackitt took the first round lead with a sizzling 3.757 second run on his CR500 and setting a new Fast Time of the day.  In the second round, however, class point leader Shane Green sailed his KX500 high over the top in 3.752 seconds to take the class win, and the Fast Time award.  Tackitt’s first ride held up for second with Popham third. 

            Veteran rider Mike Pulver enjoyed a double win day.  Riding a CR500 in the Open Stock class, his 3.900 second run in the first round was good for that.class win. Kyle Galloway was second in 3.907 seconds with John Williams third.  Pulver then used his Honda for the win in the Senior (+40) class.  He didn’t waste any time there, either, as his 3.818 second time in the first round went unmatched.  Mike Bacon was second with a 4.105 second time on his Honda, with Kevin Bond third.

            In youth class action, young Jeremiah Lyday claimed the Youth Fast Time award with a fine 4.437 second winning time on his YZ85 in the 85cc Junior Mini class.  Brett Kalaher was second in 4.488 seconds.  In other youth class action, Dustin Foley won the 50cc class with Reece Hutton second, D.J. Watson was the 65cc class winner with Foley in second, while Joe McGurer took the 85cc Senior Mini win.
