The King City Dirt Riders opened their 2006 hill climb season at their club grounds near Mt Vernon, Illinois under the threat of rain.  The rain did in fact shorten the event, coming about halfway through the second round of riding, during the 600cc class.

            Paul Hillard was the fastest of the 111 riders, sailing his hot Kawasaki 750cc triple over the top in 3.466 seconds to take the 750cc class win and the Fast Time Award.  His closest challenger was young Mike Popham, who carded a 3.586 second time on his second ride in the 250cc class to take that class win with R.D. Miller III in second place. Jake Tackitt was close too, with a 3.569 second time to win the 600cc class, just good enough to edge Cody Jenner who carded a 3.652 second run..

            Nick Green was the winner of the Youth Fast Time award with a quick 4.217 second run on his KTM to win the 85cc Junior Mini class, with Joe McGurer taking second on his KX85 in 4.307 seconds. Dakota Watson was the 50cc class winner with Nathaniel Blevins second. Brett Kalaher was the best in the 65cc class with Logan Moody second, while Jeremy James claimed the 85cc Senior Mini class with Damon Wright in second place.

            The Sunday part of the weekend doubleheader was postponed due to the rain, and rescheduled for Saturday, August 19.  The riders will be asked to pay for only one day’s gate fee at that Sweetcorn/Watermelon Festival doubleheader weekend event.  Signups will start at 10:00 AM and racing at noon.  It will include a King of the Hill class.  The regularly scheduled festival climb will start Saturday evening shortly after the completion of the rain date race.  Friday night camping for riders will be provided by the club.
