TRENT’S KING AT INDIANA STATE HILL CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Pleasure Riders unveiled their ‘new look’ on Saturday night, August 26 with 2 hills.  The ‘old’ 155 foot hill had a fourth breaker added at the top, and a new 113 foot hill had been added for the youth classes.  Shane Green was the fastest rider on the new amateur class hill, and Caleb Emory was the fastest on the Youth hill.

Green had to come from behind for his fast time as Justin Trent set the time at 4.600 seconds on his first ride in the 600cc class, with Green in second place.  In second round action, however, Green flew his KX500 over the top in 4.456 seconds to take the class win, and the Fast Time award.  Randy ‘Rocketman’ Trosper also slipped under Trent’s time with a 4.550 second run on his Honda to claim second place.

Emory was a double class winner, getting his Youth Fast Time on his KX85 with a 3.757 second time, with Jeremy James taking second on his Kawasaki.  Emory then came back with his KX125 to win the 125cc class with an excellent 4.842 seconds, with James again claiming second with a 5.071 second time on his Yamaha.

Brett Kalaher and Eric Wheelwright were also double class winners.  Kalaher got his wins in the 65cc and 85cc Junior Mini youth classes.  He crashed at 110 feet on his first ride in the 65cc class, but flew his little KX65 over the top in 4.056 seconds to take the win from Logan Moody, who had taken the first round lead.  In the Junior Mini class, Kalaher stopped the clocks in 3.854 seconds on his first ride, good enough for that class win, but went even faster with a 3.786 second run on his KX85 on his second ride.  ‘Jammin Joe’ McGurer was second with a 3.930 second time on his Kawasaki.

Wheelwright’s first win came in the 250cc class and had to come from way behind to do it.  His first round 5.062 second ride on his YZ250 had him in sixth place, with Shane Green in the lead on his Yamaha with an early 4.716 second fast time.  In the second round, Wheelwright really turned on the power and sailed over the top in 4.550 seconds to take the win, with class point leader Mike Popham close behind with a 4.571 second run on his Yamaha.  Green crashed hard at 150 feet trying to overtake the leaders, and settled for third place.

Wheelwright’s second win came in the 450cc class where his first round 4.687 second run would have been good enough for the win, but he beat it himself on his Honda thumper with a 4.634 second time.  Mark Schroeder was his closest challenger with a 4.781 second run on a YZ450F with class point leader Gordon Green close behind with a 4.822 second time on his KTM.

In other youth class action, National Champion Dakota ‘D.J. Watson won the 50cc class with a 4.965 second run on his little Cobra.

The Indiana State Championship climb was run on Sunday, and started in a driving rain.  But the rain went  away by noon and the hills dried quickly, so all the riders got at least one good run.  Justin Trent emerged as the top rider, winning the 600cc class, the King of the Hill class, and taking the Fast Time of the day trophy and money.  He didn’t waste any time, setting a 4.308 second time on his Honda in the 600cc class which would hold up all day – except for his own 4.293 second on his second ride just to prove the first one wasn’t a fluke.  Cody Jenner claimed second with a 4.421 second run on his Honda.

Then, incredibly, Trent sailed over the top of the hill in 4.308 seconds again to win the King of the Hill class – a one run winner take all shootout of the ten fastest riders of the day.  Eric Wheelwright was his closest challenger there with a 4.442 second time on his Honda.

Brett Kalaher, Caleb Emory and Mike Popham were also double class winners.

Kalaher got his wins in the 65cc and 85cc Junior youth classes, winning the 65cc class with a 4.033 second time with Logan Moody second, then winning the 85cc Junior mini class in 4.263 seconds with Austin Creek second.

Caleb Emory got his first win in the 85cc Senior Mini class with a 3.510 second time on his KX85, with Jeremy James second on his Kawasaki.           The 12 year old Emory then returned in the 125cc class and won it on his KX125 with a 4.874 second time, with James again claiming the second spot on his Yamaha.

Popham, the 250cc class points leader, got his first win in that class with a tremendous come from behind effort.  He was in fourth place at intermission with Shane Green sitting on the lead with a 4.821 second run.  In second round action, Eric Wheelwright flew his YZ250 over in 4.581 seconds to take the class lead, but Popham responded with a sizzling 4.523 second clock stopper to take the win.  Blake Cappello carded a 4.692 second run for third place.

Popham’s second win came in the 450cc class on his hot running YZ450F Yamaha.  He set the class leading time at 4.701 seconds on his first ride, then bettered that with a very quick 4.529 second ride in the second round.  His closest competitor was Gordon Green who posted a good 4.805 second time on his good running Yamaha.

In other youth action, Cole Garriott claimed the 50cc championship with a 5.612 second run on his Polini, while  Morgan Wheelwright was second with a 5.743 second time on her KTM.

In Quad action Wade Garriott claimed the 2-Stroke title with Brad Franklin second, while Jim Mahan took the 4-Stroke title with Jeff Ramey second.
